Hypothesis (or whatever): I'll be looking at a few traits of offspring of these plants, the traits are the following: Flower color (purple or white) growth rate to first "primary leaf" node, wrinkled/smooth bean pod, unmedial/asymmetric branch growth.
Sub-Hypothesis: Plant A offspring will grow more slowly than plant B offspring (like the parents did)
Procedure (thus far): I have two plants (the parent plants) from which I will asexually reproduce. From their offspring I will plant two seeds from each in a controlled container, in the same place of my apartment. When the first generation flowers, i will sexually cross-breed the plants (in a specific order, all plants from parent A will breed with all plants from parent B). This is when i'll start trying to breed out my specific traits (as listed above)
What i've observed thus far: I have the two parents plants marked; A and B which have reached sexual maturity and produced one bean pod each. Here are the observed traits of the parent plants (generation 0, plants A and B).
Plant A:
• Sprouted 6 days after plant B
• Root and hypocotyl growth was slow and merged off to the side
• Root growth coming out of soil
• One cotyledon fell off shortly after sprouting
• Primary leaves were smaller and remained 7.5 cm from dirt level
• Primary leaves folded over
• First leaf node split into two leaves
• Second leaf node split into two parts
• Third leaf node split into three stems outside of main stem
• Flowered pods appeared before plant b
• Bean pods were smooth and thick
• Flowers were white in color
• Four bean pods were produced, but only one lived to maturity
Plant B:
• Grew seemingly normal, faster than plant A
• Grew totally upright
• Reached a foot in length in only 15 days
• One primary leaf tore in half from natural causes
• Primary leaf node 15cm
• First leaf node split into 4 branches plus main stem
• Primary leaves folded over
• Primary stem was weakened by cat attack (broke and fell over, seems to have mended itself naturally)
• Fast upward growth
• Five+ bean pods produced, only one made it to maturity
• Bean pods were smooth
• White flowers
You may have noticed that I deleted a lot of content on this post. This was done to make room for my first generation of bean plant's info. The parent plant's information is condensed above, but I still have the full notes of their growth on my computer.
On 3/22/14 I planted four seeds from the parent plants.
The seeds were planted in approx 9cm of soil, .5 cm deep with .5cm soil covering the seeds. Both seeds were planted in pots 15cm in diameter, and are in the same location under incandescent light 12 hr/day.
The pots are marked A (1+2) and B (1+2), as the plants germinate I will mark one plant as 1 and one as 2 to distinguish their features. More info coming when the seeds germinate (4-5 more days).
----------------------------------------first offspring entry!----------------------------------
plants A1 and A2 have emerged from the soil (just the tips of the primary stem.
B plants have not yet germinated.
--------------------------------------------3/26/14-----------------------------------------
Both plants A1 and A2 have emerged from the soil - but both grew upside down for some reason. I wired plant A1 back into the soil so that it would take root, and it has seemed to work. Plant A2 is growing into a loop, but is finally coming out of the ground.
Primary leaves have not yet left the cotyledons, though they’re very close.
I’ve been watering more sparsely because of mold.
All plants are still under incandescent light 12+ hours a day.
Plants B1 and B2 have not shown any sign of germination.
insects have somehow sprung to life in the seemingly sterile soil.
